I choose the FlyOnWheels, my own idea for scooty/bike rental service in India as my prompt project for Google certification in UX Design.

As a UI/UX Designer, I conducted the user research, developed prototypes, wireframes for the designing of this app from scratch. The main aim of this project is to develop a mobile app where the customer has access to the actual vehicle picture which he is booking, feasibility of time of pickup and drop off and the also providing more options of pickup and drop off. It further aims to give the user the feature to upload the documents without the need to provide actual documents like aadhar. Thus solving for the pain point and making system transparent on both ends.

Conducted a user research to understand the target audience, their pain points and what are they exactly looking forward to in terms of renting experience. As per my basic understanding, people usually rent scooty/bike when travelling a new city. Keeping this use case in mind, I took a set of 4 people and asked them a bunch of questions via a phone call. Idea was to ask them open ended questions to better understand the situation.

A busy software developer who loves to travel. He is an ambivert who usually likes to travel alone. He is an explorer, who wants to enjoy the city in its raw form and so feels renting a scooty/bike is the best option. Though he finds it difficult to search and book a vehicle in advance for local sightseeing.

In past, sometimes he has faced issues with the rented vehicle when he booked online. For him pickups and drop-offs are also a headache. He wishes to have an app to pre-book the vehicle easily by seeing the actual image of the vehicle avaiable at the selected dates. Also, there is the option to choose the pickup and drop-off location of the rented vehichle.

3. What are the type and quality of competitors’ products? (Description)

Thrillophilia is a broad tour and travel company offering other services like staycations and tour packages also. It has a well-designed website with no mobile app support. Its functionality appears limited in case of notifications, updates and offers on mobile. The cost is high.

GoBikes is a small chain of bike rental services. It has a well-designed website but no mobile app. The services are 24/7 along with no need for hard documentation and full support for roadside assistance. The website is easy to navigate with a decent consistency and user flow but lacks hierarchy and information architecture.

VOGO: A very well-designed mobile app version. The website lacks many UX/UI features. The mobile experience is amazing with minimal animations and illustrations. The overall brand identity is intact with a clean-clear information hierarchy.

Zoomcar: is a large-scale doorstep car rental platform. It has both a website and mobile app. The interactivity on both the versions is good. Though on websites certain elements are difficult to find which can easily be referred to on the mobile app.

Rentabike: operating only in Goa at various locations. The website has unclear design and architecture. There is no mobile version available. Features are good but the arrangement makes the user experience irritating

4. How do competitors position themselves in the market? (Description)

Thrillophilia markets itself to provide experiences focussing more on all tour packages. They offer a variety of vehicles to choose from to expand their user base. They target higher-income clientele.

GoBikes positions itself as a small chain of bike rental platforms. They take into account the users' needs to book bikes near the airport. Also, they focus on the user's needs for documentation and roadside assistance.

VOGO positions itself as a cheap honda activa rental service to its customers. The service is highly economical and is centered around the common mass. The mobile app is easy to use with referrals and offers to add to the user experience.

Zoomcar positions itself as an affordable car rental option. They focus: “ How you can without downpayment and the burden of insurance and all, enjoy the benefits of a car at minimal costs.”

Rentabike positions itself as an affordable bike/scooty rental service. They have the website but you need to send them a request for the vehicle or make a call. The website does not offer much to the user though.

5. What do competitors do well? What could they do better? (Description)

Thrillophilia: offers different duration options for vehicle renting. The website is pretty decent with all the features but they fail to establish the connectivity with the user because of lack of mobile app. They should have a mobile app.

GoBikes: takes into account the pain points related to user documents and roadside assistance. One can digitally upload the documents. They update through sms and mail but lack mobile app features. Also, the branding is unclear on the website.

VOGO: has a website and a well-defined mobile app. The mobile application has all the features except that they offer no choice in the type of bike/scooty. Only honda activa(keyless) is available. The website directs you to the app store on clicking the book option that can be improved. They should start booking through websites as well.

Zoomcar: mobile shows clearly all the options. Further it offers one way, round trip and subscriptions of cars. They could do better showing the actual image of the car the person is going to get at the checkout page. So, he has the exact idea. Also, the website focuses mainly on monthly, yearly subscriptions and the elements of renting on a daily basis is not available.

Rentabike : can do much better. They have the option of whatsapp number and mobile number that is good. But the website needs a lot of work.

Some gaps I identified are:

Actual image of the vehicle is missing in all the competitors.

Most of the competitors don’t have an online document upload section.

Most of them also don’t provide flexibility in timings.

Language appears as a barrier as all of them are in only English.

Many of them do not provide mobile apps.

Storyboarding helped me clearly layout the user flow and expeirnece into action. I developed two types of storyboards - Big Picture Storyboard and Close Up Story Board. Big Picture storyboarding provided better insight about the user scenario in which they might use and book through our app. Close up story board helped me in further creating sitemaps about the screens that would be required when I start wireframing.
